Rapidly Exploring Application Design Through Speed Dating

We utilize an experimental Speed Dating service to examine racial preferences in mate selection. Our data allow for the direct observation of individual decisions of randomly paired individuals; we may therefore directly infer racial preferences, which was not possible in prior studies. We observe stronger same race preferences for blacks and Asians than for Hispanics and whites, with insignificant overall level of racial preferences for female Hispanics and males of all races. Females exhibit stronger racial preferences than males. Differences in self-reported shared interests largely mediate the observed racial preferences. Collectively, our results imply strong but very heterogeneous racial preferences. Finally, we compare our experimental results with the levels of marital segregation in the United States. Because feedback can be awkward and hard to do if not practiced often, you need to incorporate feedback exercises into the habit of the teams. Self-managed teams need to be able to solve their differences on their own, and only when they feel comfortable to tell each other about the good and the bad, the big and the small, can they succeed at difficult times. The Speed Dating or Speed Feedback is another exercise that you can consider to practice feedback with your team.

This format is very interesting because it allows everyone to open up a bit and practice face-to-face feedback without making them feel too exposed. There is something about the countdown, the movement around the chairs and the noise around you that somehow takes some of the pressure off. The execution is very simple, we make two rows of chairs in a way that half of the team is sitting in front of the other half, so everyone has someone in front of them.

Then the fun begins, we setup a timer, it could go from 1 to 4 minutes. I advise to start with 2 minutes. When the clock starts counting, people sitting on one side will provide positive feedback to the person in front of them. These are of course all those things that one appreciates about the other. When the time is up, is turn for the other row to provide the positive feedback for 2 minutes.

While the user-centered design methods we bring from human-computer interaction to ubicomp help sketch ideas and refine prototypes, few tools or techniques help explore divergent design concepts, reflect on their merits, and come to a new understanding of design opportunities and ways to address them. We present Speed Dating, a design method for rapidly exploring application concepts and their interactions and contextual dimensions without requiring any technology implementation.

Situated between sketching and prototyping, Speed Dating structures comparison of concepts, helping identify and understand contextual risk factors and develop approaches to address them. We illustrate how to use Speed Dating by applying it to our research on the smart home and dual-income families, and highlight our findings from using this method.

Speed Dating Experiment. What influences love at first sight? (Or, at least, love in the first four minutes?) This dataset was compiled by Columbia Business.

The media focuses on those who are considered beautiful, intelligent people are consistently praised and respected, and the wealthy are envied because of their luxurious lifestyles. Many people set their ultimate goals to be proficient in one or more of these areas, and in the search for a romantic partner, men and women tend to put importance on these attributes. To investigate this claim, data from a speed dating experiment was used.

Using the speed dating design provided the experimenters with both experimental control and resulting data on decisions that were identical to real-life decisions in regards to what a person truly looks for in a romantic partner. Before partaking in the speed dating events, each subject was asked to complete a pre-event survey in which they were asked about attributes such as their name, email, the undergraduate institution they attended, and the zip code of where they grew up. They were also asked to provide scores to the six attributes of attractiveness, sincerity, intelligence, fun, ambition, and shared interests in regards to which attributes are most important when it comes to what they look for in potential dates.

A random number of subjects were gathered for each speed dating event, so every event did not have the same number of male and female participants. They were also asked to rate their partner on the six different attributes previously mentioned attractiveness, sincerity, intelligence, fun, ambition, and shared interests. The dataset includes the results of fourteen speed dating events hosted by the experimenters.

Each subject was also asked to complete follow up surveys. Both surveys asked the same questions as the pre-event survey in giving scores of importance to the six attributes, and the later survey also asekd if the participant went on more dates with partners they met from the event. The overarching claim made previously was that men and women tend to put importance on beauty, intelligence, and wealth in the search for a romantic partner.
